Plant Resistance Genes for Fungal Pathogens - Physiological Models and Identification in Cereal Crops
نویسنده
چکیده
The complex biological phenomenon “resistance” can be reduced to single Mendelian traits acting on both the plant and the pathogen side in a number o f pathosystems. According to the “gene-for-gene hypothesis”, the outcome o f a plant/pathogen interaction in these cases is in compatibility if a plant carrying a particular resistance gene and a pathogen with the comple mentary avirulence gene meet. This suggests a causal role o f resistance genes in a recognition process initiating active plant defense responses. Fundamentally different strategies are followed to identify these genes molecularly depending on the plant and pathogen species involved. Fun gal diseases o f crop plants, especially those o f cereals, cause dramatic yield losses worldwide. It is assumed that a molecular characterization o f plant genes conferring resistance to fungal pathogens will lead to a better understanding o f the plant defense system in general permitting the development o f new methods o f crop plant protection.

Evaluation of the Resistance of Some Indigenous Wheat Genotypes to Cereal Cyst Nematode, Heterodera Filipjevi
Cereal cyst nematode (CCN) is one of the most deleterious pathogens of cereal crops worldwide including Iran. The species Heterodera filipjevi is widely distributed in the fields of wheat. Growing the resistant cultivars is a suitable environmental friendly and cost-saving procedure for nematode control. In current research, the resistance of 13 indigenous wheat genotypes and seven common ...

Modern agriculture favours the selection and spread of novel plant diseases. Furthermore, crop genetic resistance against pathogens is often rendered ineffective within a few years of its commercial deployment. Leptosphaeria maculans, the cause of phoma stem canker of oilseed rape, develops gene-for-gene interactions with its host plant, and has a high evolutionary potential to render ineffecti...
متن کاملComplex Interactions between Fungal Avirulence Genes and Their Corresponding Plant Resistance Genes and Consequences for Disease Resistance Management
During infection, pathogens secrete an arsenal of molecules, collectively called effectors, key elements of pathogenesis which modulate innate immunity of the plant and facilitate infection. Some of these effectors can be recognized directly or indirectly by resistance (R) proteins from the plant and are then called avirulence (AVR) proteins. This recognition usually triggers defense responses ...
متن کاملThe durable wheat disease resistance gene Lr34 confers common rust and northern corn leaf blight resistance in maize
Maize (corn) is one of the most widely grown cereal crops globally. Fungal diseases of maize cause significant economic damage by reducing maize yields and by increasing input costs for disease management. The most sustainable control of maize diseases is through the release and planting of maize cultivars with durable disease resistance. The wheat gene Lr34 provides durable and partial field r...
